Barabar Caves sit in Jehanabad district, four caves — Lomas Rishi, Sudama, Karan Chaupar, and Visvakarma — excavated during Emperor Ashoka's reign in the 3rd century BCE, considered the oldest surviving rock-cut caves anywhere in India. Carved by the Ajivika sect, an ascetic tradition that flourished alongside early Buddhism and Jainism before eventually disappearing, the caves feature a remarkable interior surface finish known as "Mauryan polish" — precise enough to produce a genuine mirror-like sheen on solid granite, an engineering achievement that later Indian rock-cut architecture, even at far more famous sites, has rarely matched in quality. Barabar Caves suit travelers with a genuine interest in ancient engineering and lesser-known religious history — the Lomas Rishi Cave's distinctive arched, wooden-lattice-style facade rewards close architectural study, and understanding the now largely vanished Ajivika tradition that commissioned these caves adds a genuinely obscure historical dimension.
