Mainpat

Mainpat sits at around 1,099 meters near Ambikapur in northern Chhattisgarh's Surguja district, a hill station known both for its pleasant climate — earning comparisons to Shimla — and for a Tibetan refugee settlement established here following the 1959 exile, home today to roughly 2,300 residents descended from the original 1,400 refugees. The community's Takpo Buddhist Monastery has grown in significance since a visit by the Dalai Lama, and Mainpat's surrounding hills, waterfalls, and streams offer genuine natural beauty alongside this specific cultural presence. Mainpat suits travelers wanting a quiet hill escape combined with unexpected cultural depth — Tiger Point and Machali Point offer scenic viewpoints, the latter including a small waterfall and streams with colorful fish, while Bisar Pani (also called Ulta Pani, "reverse water") presents a genuinely disorienting optical or gravity-defying phenomenon where a stream appears to flow uphill.
