Sirpur

Sirpur sits on the Mahanadi River roughly 78 km east of Raipur in Mahasamund district, an ancient town referenced in Indian texts and inscriptions as "Sripura" — city of auspiciousness — that flourished as a major religious and trading center from the 5th to 12th centuries CE. Excavations, ongoing since the mid-20th century and significantly expanded in recent decades, have uncovered a remarkable concentration of religious architecture: 12 Buddhist viharas (monasteries), a Jain vihara, monolithic statues of both Buddha and Mahavira, 22 Shiva temples, 5 Vishnu temples, an underground granary market, and a 6th-century public bathing tank — evidence of centuries of overlapping religious patronage at a single site. Sirpur suits travelers with a genuine interest in India's multi-faith archaeological heritage — the Lakshmana Temple, among the site's most significant structures and first documented by British archaeologist Alexander Cunningham in 1872, showcases detailed brick and stone carving predating many of India's more famous temple complexes. Given Sirpur's relative obscurity outside archaeological circles, visitors can explore the site with a level of quiet unavailable at India's more publicized ancient ruins.
