Gir National Park

Gir National Park sits in the Junagadh region of Saurashtra, the last remaining wild habitat of the Asiatic lion — a subspecies once found across the Middle East and South Asia, now surviving nowhere else on the planet outside this single forest reserve and adjoining protected areas. The population's recovery, from a low of barely a few dozen individuals in the early 20th century to several hundred today, ranks among the most significant conservation success stories in Indian wildlife history, and remains an active, ongoing effort involving both the forest department and the local Maldhari pastoral community who have coexisted with the lions for generations. Gir suits wildlife travelers specifically seeking an experience unavailable anywhere else — while India has several parks with tigers, Gir offers the singular chance to see wild Asiatic lions, along with leopards, striped hyenas, and a rich variety of birdlife within the same dry deciduous forest. Jeep safaris, arranged through a structured permit system with designated zones and time slots, are the standard way to explore the park, and reasonably strong sighting odds (though never guaranteed) have made Gir one of India's most consistently rewarding wildlife destinations.
