Junagadh (Girnar Hill)

Junagadh sits at the base of Girnar Hill in Saurashtra, a city whose history stretches back to the Mauryan Empire — the Girnar rock edicts, inscribed under Emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BCE, rank among the oldest surviving decipherable inscriptions in India, predating the vast majority of the country's standing monuments by well over a millennium. Girnar Hill itself, rising sharply above the city, holds deep significance in both Jain and Hindu tradition, its summit and upper slopes home to a cluster of centuries-old temples reached by a demanding staircase of roughly 10,000 steps. Junagadh suits travelers with a serious interest in ancient history and pilgrimage architecture — beyond the Ashokan edicts, the city's Uparkot Fort, with origins dating back over two millennia and including Buddhist caves cut into its rock, and the Mahabat Maqbara, an elaborately domed 19th-century mausoleum, add further historical depth. The Girnar climb itself, while genuinely demanding, is undertaken by pilgrims of all ages, with palanquin service available for those unable to make the full ascent, and the Jain temple cluster partway up (particularly the Neminath Temple complex) ranks among the most significant Jain pilgrimage sites in Gujarat.
