Modhera Sun Temple

Modhera Sun Temple sits on the banks of the Pushpavati River in Mehsana district, built in 1026-27 CE under King Bhima I of the Solanki dynasty and dedicated to Surya, the sun god. The temple complex is precisely engineered around solar alignment — positioned so that the rising sun strikes the sanctum sanctorum directly at the equinoxes — and includes the striking Surya Kund, a vast, geometrically stepped tank lined with dozens of smaller shrines, considered one of the finest examples of stepped water architecture in India alongside its more famous Patan counterpart.
