Chitkul sits at the far end of the Baspa Valley in Kinnaur district, commonly known as the last Indian village before the border with Tibet. At around 3,450 meters, it's ringed by snow peaks, apple orchards, and wooden Kinnauri houses, with the turquoise Baspa River running alongside. Once accessible only to a trickle of trekkers, Chitkul has become a well-known offbeat stop for travelers extending their trip beyond Sangla, though it retains a remote, end-of-the-road feel. The village suits travelers who enjoy stark, high-altitude landscapes and slower village life over crowded hill stations. Its short walking trails, the Mathi Devi Temple, and views across the Baspa Valley make for an easy day or two of exploring, while nearby Sangla and Rakcham extend the trip further. Indian nationals don't need a permit to visit, though foreign travelers require an Inner Line Permit for the Kinnaur border area. Chitkul is best combined with a wider Kinnaur circuit covering Sangla and Kalpa, rather than visited on its own.

Nearest Railway Station: Shimla Railway Station, approx. 110–230 km (via the Kalka–Shimla line). By Road: Via Shimla–Rampur–Karcham–Sangla, then on to Chitkul; regular buses and taxis run from Shimla and Chandigarh to Sangla/Reckong Peo, with local transport onward.
