Nako is a small, high-altitude village in Kinnaur district, sitting at over 3,600 meters in the Hangrang Valley near the border with Tibet. Built around a small lake edged with willow and poplar trees, the village retains a strongly Buddhist character, with old monastery buildings, mani walls, and yak and horse herding still part of daily life. Its remoteness and altitude have kept Nako well off the mainstream tourist track, even relative to other Kinnaur villages.
