Sarahan is a quiet hill town in the Shimla district, once the summer capital of the erstwhile Bushahr princely state and now known chiefly for the Bhimakali Temple — a striking example of Indo-Tibetan wooden architecture and one of the 51 Shakti Peeths of Hindu tradition. Perched above the Sutlej valley with the snow-clad Shrikhand peak visible across the gorge, Sarahan sits at the point where the mainstream Shimla hill circuit gives way to the more remote Kinnaur region, making it a natural stopover rather than a final destination for most travelers. The town suits pilgrims, architecture enthusiasts, and travelers using it as a base before continuing into Kinnaur. Beyond the temple complex, Sarahan is surrounded by deodar forests, orchards, and trekking routes, including the base for treks toward the Bhaba Valley and Shrikhand Mahadev. Its relatively short distance from Shimla, combined with genuinely quiet streets outside the temple precinct, makes it an easy add-on for anyone heading toward Sangla, Kalpa, or further into Spiti.
