Tabo is a small village on the banks of the Spiti River, known almost entirely for the Tabo Monastery — founded in 996 CE and one of the oldest continuously functioning Buddhist monasteries in India and the Himalayas. Its mud-built halls house centuries-old murals and stucco sculptures that have earned it comparisons to the Ajanta caves, giving the modest village an outsized cultural significance relative to its size. Surrounded by the stark, cold-desert landscape typical of Spiti, Tabo sits roughly midway between Reckong Peo and Kaza.
