Bangus Valley is a sprawling high-altitude meadow — nearly 300 square kilometers of grassland, coniferous forest, and streams — tucked into the Kupwara district near the Line of Control. Split into "Boud Bangus" (Big Bangus) and "Lokut Bangus" (Small Bangus), it sits at around 10,000 feet, circled by the Shamsbari range and fed by more than a dozen small tributary streams that eventually form the Pohru River. Despite its scale and beauty, Bangus has stayed almost entirely off the standard Kashmir circuit, partly due to its remoteness and partly due to years of limited access tied to the region's security situation. The valley suits travelers who genuinely want to say they've been somewhere in Kashmir that most people haven't — there's no built tourist infrastructure here, no cafés or gift shops, just open meadow, grazing livestock, and mountain silence. Camping is the standard way to experience Bangus properly, since accommodation is limited to a single forest hut and seasonal tented camps in the main meadow. It's often paired with a trip to nearby Lolab Valley, either as a same-trip extension or as the more comfortable base to sleep in before a day tour into Bangus itself.
