Deoghar is home to the Baidyanath Temple, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Shiva worship in Hindu tradition, and one of India's most significant pilgrimage sites during Shravan month (typically July-August), when pilgrims (kanwariyas) carry holy Ganges water on foot from Sultanganj, roughly 105 km away, to pour over the shrine in a demonstration of devotion undertaken by millions each year. Outside this specific festival window, Deoghar offers a considerably calmer temple-town experience, including Naulakha Mandir, a striking temple built in a distinctive architectural style by the local Basu family in the early 20th century. Deoghar suits pilgrims visiting during Shravan specifically for that intense devotional experience, and quieter travelers the rest of the year wanting genuine Jyotirlinga significance without overwhelming crowds — the Baidyanath Temple, Naulakha Mandir, and a short trip to Trikuta Parvat's ropeway round out a substantive visit.
