Kudremukh

Kudremukh, meaning "horse face" for the distinctive shape of its summit ridge, is a peak and surrounding national park in the Western Ghats of Chikmagalur district, protecting one of the most significant remaining stretches of the region's shola-grassland ecosystem. Unlike more accessible Western Ghats hill destinations, Kudremukh National Park has no roads running through its core, meaning genuine exploration requires trekking — a deliberate conservation choice that has kept the park's rolling grasslands and dense forest patches considerably wilder than most comparable protected areas. Kudremukh suits serious trekkers rather than casual sightseers — the summit trek, typically a full-day round trip from the base village of Kudremukh (or Mullodu), climbs through forest before opening onto sweeping grassland ridges with views extending across the Western Ghats on clear days. Forest department permission is required for the trek, given the park's protected status, and numbers are sometimes limited to manage environmental impact. The area's isolation and lack of road access through its core have also made it a stronghold for wildlife including the Malabar giant squirrel and, more elusively, tigers and elephants, adding a genuine wilderness dimension beyond the trekking itself.
