Sirsi and Yana Rocks

Yana is a pair of dramatic black, crystalline limestone rock formations — Bhairaveshwara Shikhara and Mohini Shikhara — rising abruptly to roughly 90 and 120 meters from the surrounding dense evergreen rainforest of the Western Ghats, an outcrop so visually startling it's difficult to photograph in a way that fully conveys their scale against the flat forest canopy. Sirsi, the nearest sizable town, serves as the practical base, itself a quiet agricultural hub known for areca nut and spice cultivation, with its own set of waterfalls (Unchalli and Magod Falls among the notable ones) extending the area's appeal well beyond Yana alone. The site suits travelers drawn to genuinely unusual natural geology and quiet Western Ghats forest, reached by a walk of roughly 2-3 km from the nearest road access through dense jungle. A small cave temple dedicated to Bhairaveshwara sits within one of the formations, adding a modest pilgrimage dimension to what is otherwise a purely geological curiosity. Given Sirsi's position inland from the Gokarna-Jog Falls coastal corridor, it works well as a detour for travelers already exploring that stretch of Karnataka's Western Ghats and coast, rather than a standalone destination requiring a dedicated long-distance trip.
