Munroe Island sits at the confluence of the Ashtamudi Lake and Kallada River near Kollam, a cluster of small islands connected by narrow, winding canals, named after Colonel John Munro, a British Resident who reclaimed the land in the early 19th century. The island's backwater ecosystem, considerably quieter and less commercially developed than Alleppey's famous houseboat circuit, offers genuine village-level backwater life — coir-making, fishing, and traditional agriculture continuing much as they have for generations. Munroe Island suits travelers wanting an authentic, less touristy backwater experience — canoe rides through the narrow canals, visits to coir-making villages, and simple observation of daily island life offer a genuinely different pace from Alleppey's larger houseboat tourism.
