Hanle is a remote village in the Changthang region near the Tibet border, historically known for its centuries-old monastery and, more recently, for hosting the Indian Astronomical Observatory — one of the highest optical telescope sites in the world, chosen for this remote plateau precisely because of its exceptionally dark, clear, high-altitude skies. In 2022, the surrounding area was officially designated India's first Dark Sky Reserve, a formal recognition of what astronomers had known for years: this is among the best stargazing locations anywhere on Earth. Hanle suits travelers with a specific interest in astronomy and astrophotography, as well as anyone simply chasing the experience of a night sky essentially untouched by light pollution — the Milky Way visible in a way that's become genuinely rare to see from anywhere accessible by road. The 17th-century Hanle Monastery adds historical and spiritual weight to the visit, perched above the village with views across the stark Changthang plateau. Given the remoteness and altitude, Hanle is best combined with a wider Changthang circuit including Tso Moriri or Pangong Tso, rather than visited as an isolated day trip, and an Inner Line Permit is required given the village's proximity to the border.
