Suru Valley runs south from Kargil town along the Suru River, a tributary of the Indus, framed by the Zanskar Range and the dramatic twin peaks of Nun and Kun — at over 7,000 meters, the highest peaks in this part of the Himalayas outside the Karakoram. Unlike the stark brown landscapes typical of much of Ladakh, Suru's lower stretches are notably green, fed by glacial meltwater and dotted with willow and poplar groves, making it a visually distinct detour for travelers passing through Kargil on the Srinagar-Leh route. The valley suits trekkers and mountaineers using it as a base for expeditions toward the Nun-Kun massif, as well as travelers simply looking for a scenic, lower-effort stop that most Ladakh-bound tourists skip entirely in their rush to reach Leh. Nearest Railway Station: Jammu Tawi Railway Station, approx. 440–500 km to Kargil. By Road: From Kargil, drive south along the Suru River toward Sankoo, Panikhar, and Rangdum (Sankoo approx. 40 km, Rangdum approx. 130 km); the road beyond Sangra is prone to landslides in shoulder season, and the route to Zanskar via Pensi La closes from November to mid-June.
