Tso Kar is a saline lake on the high Changthang plateau, sitting between Leh and Tso Moriri along one of the routes connecting the two, and named for the white mineral deposits — "Tso Kar" meaning "White Lake" — that ring its shoreline where the water has evaporated over centuries. Considerably smaller and less visited than either Pangong Tso or Tso Moriri, it's become something of a connoisseur's stop on the Changthang circuit: a genuinely quiet lake, home to a semi-nomadic Changpa herding community and a notable population of birdlife, including the black-necked crane during breeding season. The lake suits travelers already making the journey out toward Tso Moriri who want an additional, distinctly different stop along the way, as well as birdwatchers specifically drawn to its seasonal crane population. Thukje village nearby offers a glimpse of Changpa pastoral life, largely built around yak and pashmina goat herding, in a landscape stark and open enough to see weather systems forming from miles away. Given its position en route rather than as a standalone destination, most visitors treat Tso Kar as a deliberate stop within a longer Changthang loop rather than a dedicated trip of its own.
