Tso Moriri sits at nearly 15,000 feet in the Changthang region of eastern Ladakh, a high-altitude lake that rivals Pangong Tso in scale and color while seeing a fraction of the visitor traffic — largely because the drive is longer and the lake isn't a film location. Entirely within Indian territory (unlike Pangong, which extends into Chinese-controlled land), Tso Moriri is ringed by bare brown mountains that turn the water a deep, saturated blue on clear days, with Korzok village and its 400-year-old monastery sitting on the northwestern shore as the lake's only permanent settlement. The lake suits travelers who've already done or specifically want to skip Pangong Tso's crowds, as well as wildlife watchers drawn to the Changthang plateau's population of kiang (Tibetan wild ass) and migratory birdlife around the lake's marshy fringes. Korzok Monastery, one of the highest in Ladakh, anchors the small settlement and offers a quiet counterpoint to the lake's vast, empty scale. Given the distance and altitude involved, most visitors treat Tso Moriri as a dedicated overnight trip from Leh rather than a rushed day excursion, allowing time to properly take in the lake at both sunset and sunrise.
