Zanskar Valley sits in the Kargil district, separated from the rest of Ladakh by some of the highest passes in the region and cut off from road access for roughly half the year by heavy snowfall. Padum, the valley's main town, sits at the heart of a landscape of ancient monasteries, terraced barley fields, and dramatic river gorges that has stayed genuinely isolated — both geographically and culturally — even by Ladakh's already-remote standards. The valley's winter identity is defined by the Chadar Trek, a multi-day trek across the frozen surface of the Zanskar River itself, once the only way locals could reach Leh in winter and now one of the most demanding and sought-after treks in the Himalayas. Zanskar suits both summer travelers drawn to its monasteries and mountain scenery — Karsha, Phuktal, and Stongdey among the most significant — and serious winter trekkers specifically chasing the Chadar experience. The valley's isolation has preserved a slower, more traditional way of life than much of the rest of Ladakh, visible in its farming villages and monastic communities. Given the distance and demanding road conditions, Zanskar rewards travelers willing to commit real time, whether visiting in summer via the long drive from Leh or Kargil, or undertaking the Chadar Trek in the depths of winter.

Nearest Airport: Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport, Leh, approx. 420–460 km via road. Nearest Railway Station: Jammu Tawi Railway Station, approx. 700–720 km overall. By Road: From Leh, drive to Kargil (approx. 230 km), then continue to Padum in Zanskar (a further 230+ km, together taking 12–14 hours or more, often split across two days); the road is only open roughly June through October.
June–September: The only reliable window for road access, with monasteries and villages fully accessible. January–February: Chadar Trek season, when the frozen Zanskar River becomes passable on foot — an entirely different, expedition-level way to experience the valley. October–December & March–May: Largely inaccessible by road; not recommended.
A summer visit needs at least 5–6 days given the long drive in and out; the Chadar Trek alone typically runs 8–9 days.
It's genuinely demanding and carries real risk from extreme cold and unpredictable ice conditions; it should only be attempted with an experienced, registered operator.
No, the road is only open roughly June to October; winter access is only via the Chadar Trek itself.
Phuktal Monastery, Karsha Monastery, and Stongdey Monastery.
