Laitlum Canyons — the name translates roughly to "end of the hills" — is a clifftop viewpoint in the East Khasi Hills, a short drive from Shillong, offering one of Meghalaya's most dramatic sudden views: rolling green hills that fall away without warning into a deep canyon, with the village of Rasong visible far below. Unlike many of Meghalaya's attractions, which require a long drive to remote districts, Laitlum's closeness to Shillong makes it one of the easiest big-payoff stops on a standard itinerary. The viewpoint suits travelers with limited time who still want a genuinely dramatic Meghalaya landscape moment, as well as those looking for a short, rewarding trek down into the canyon toward Rasong village for a closer look at Khasi rural life. Sunset is a particularly popular time to visit, when the canyon's scale and the changing light combine for one of the more photographed moments in the state. Given its proximity to Shillong, Laitlum works equally well as a half-day trip on its own or as a stop combined with Krang Suri Falls or other East Khasi Hills destinations further afield.
