Mon and Longwa

Mon district sits in far northern Nagaland, home to the Konyak Naga people, historically known for their warrior tradition and, among older generations, distinctive facial tattoos marking past headhunting practice — a custom that ended decades ago but whose last surviving tattooed elders can still occasionally be met and, with proper permission and respect, photographed. Longwa, the district's largest village, sits directly on the India-Myanmar border, with the Angh's (chief's) house famously built so that it straddles both countries — allowing a visitor to stand with one foot in each nation, a genuinely singular geographic and cultural experience.
