Nawalgarh is the practical base for exploring Shekhawati, a semi-arid region in northeastern Rajasthan dotted with small towns whose wealthy 19th and early 20th-century merchant families — the Marwaris, many of whom later became major Indian industrial dynasties — competed to build the most lavishly frescoed havelis (mansions) in their hometowns. The result, spread across towns including Nawalgarh, Mandawa, Fatehpur, and Dundlod, is one of the world's largest concentrations of mural art outside a museum, painted directly onto building exteriors and courtyards. Shekhawati suits travelers interested in art, architecture, and a slower, more exploratory kind of sightseeing than a checklist of forts — many of the finest havelis sit unmarked on ordinary streets, discovered as much by wandering as by following a guidebook. Frescoes range from religious and mythological scenes to surprisingly literal depictions of European trains, cars, and colonial figures, reflecting the merchants' exposure to the wider world through trade. Nawalgarh's Podar Haveli Museum offers a well-curated introduction, while Mandawa and Fatehpur reward those willing to drive a little further for less-restored, more weathered examples of the same tradition.
