Chopta is a small alpine meadow in the Rudraprayag district, sitting inside the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary along the old Gopeshwar-Guptkashi route. Often nicknamed the "Mini Switzerland of India" for its rolling green bugyals and rhododendron forests, it has become one of Uttarakhand's most popular short treks, largely because it delivers a genuine high-altitude experience without demanding more than a couple of days. From here, a manageable trail climbs to Tungnath, the highest Shiva temple in the world, and continues to the Chandrashila summit for a sweeping Himalayan panorama. Chopta suits trekkers, photographers, and weekend travelers looking for a short but rewarding mountain trip from Delhi or Rishikesh. Its meadows are dotted with seasonal camps and a handful of guesthouses, and the surrounding sanctuary is home to the elusive musk deer and a wide range of Himalayan bird species. Beyond Tungnath and Chandrashila, the nearby Deoriatal lake and Rohini Bugyal extend the area's appeal for those with a few extra days. Chopta works well year-round, with snow trekking possible in winter for more experienced visitors.
