Sankri sits at around 1,900 meters in Uttarkashi district's Mori tehsil, the last motorable village within the Govind Wildlife Sanctuary and the essential base camp for some of Uttarakhand's most celebrated treks — Har Ki Dun, Kedarkantha, Bali Pass, Borasu Pass, and Phulara Ridge all begin here. The village itself, framed by the Tons River valley and traditional wooden Garhwali architecture, has grown into a proper trekking hub while retaining genuine mountain-village character, distinct from more commercially developed trek-base towns elsewhere in India. Sankri suits serious trekkers specifically — while the village itself offers pleasant walks and river views, its real purpose is as a staging ground for multi-day Himalayan treks of varying difficulty, from Kedarkantha's relatively accessible winter snow trek to Har Ki Dun's more demanding valley trek. Given the roughly 8-10 hour drive from Dehradun, most visitors treat Sankri as an overnight stop before beginning their chosen trek the following morning.
