Buxa Tiger Reserve sits in Alipurduar district along the Bhutan border, its dense sal forest and hill terrain distinct from the flatter grassland of neighboring Jaldapara and Gorumara. The reserve's centerpiece, Buxa Fort, perched on a hilltop reachable by a forest trek, has a layered history — a Bhutanese stronghold, later a British colonial-era prison used to hold Indian freedom fighters, including several notable figures from the independence movement. Buxa suits travelers wanting a quieter, more forested wildlife-and-history combination than the Dooars' more visited parks — the trek up to Buxa Fort, passing through dense forest and small villages, rewards both the historical significance of the site and the physical journey to reach it. Wildlife includes elephants, leopards, and occasionally tigers, though sightings are less predictable than at Jaldapara given the denser terrain.
