Jaldapara and Gorumara National Parks sit in the Dooars region at the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas, both built around riverine grassland — Jaldapara along the Torsa River, Gorumara between the Murti and Raidak — and both protecting significant populations of the Indian one-horned rhinoceros alongside elephants, Bengal tigers, and gaur. Jaldapara, the larger of the two, is particularly known for elephant-back safaris through tall grass where rhinos are commonly sighted; Gorumara offers watchtower-based wildlife viewing across several observation points. The parks suit wildlife travelers wanting rhino sightings without traveling to Assam's Kaziranga — West Bengal's own Dooars population is significant and considerably less crowded. Both parks close during monsoon (mid-June through September), and jeep or elephant safaris require advance booking, particularly in peak winter season. Combined with nearby Chilapata Forest's old fort ruins and Buxa Tiger Reserve, the wider Dooars region offers several days of wildlife-focused exploration.
